Jerry is introduced as part of a group of five young friends—Sally Hardesty, Franklin Hardesty, Pam, Kirk, and Jerry himself—bouncing through the Texas countryside in a beat-up van. He's the nervous one, the guy who fidgets and tries to smooth things over when arguments flare, but his loyalty keeps him in the van when he should have run. After the group stops at the Sawyer family's remote farmhouse, Jerry wanders off to find Kirk and Pam, his footsteps echoing through a house that smells of old meat and rust.

The old farmhouse creaked in the heat, every board groaning like a held breath. Jerry called out for Kirk, his voice swallowed by the buzzing flies that clustered on the windows. He pushed open a screen door, its spring whining, and stepped into a room cluttered with bones and feathers—a butcher's hoard. A freezer hummed in the corner, its lid slightly ajar. He lifted it. Inside, a face stared back, blue-lipped and glassy-eyed: Kirk's. Before Jerry could scream, a hammer swung from the darkness, catching him in the skull with a wet crack. The last thing he saw was the floor, splintered and dark, rushing up to meet him.
